As in many early records, names are often spelled several ways, it is no different in this family.  After the family arrived in Missouri about 1857, brothers and sisters spelled their name differently.  The earliest spelling seems to be "Rimby," which I will use but many of the families with the spelling of "Rimbey" are related.  Rimby, as a definition is not listed in any references.

There is a dispute as to the lineage of William Burris Rimby.  Some of the families in Missouri lay a distant "claim" to the Rimby's in Pennsylvania.  But the Pennsylvania families state there is no proof or mention of a William in the families that match our William.  Nor have I not found a William that would match.  Family history says that William was raised in an orphanage in Pennsylvania and some believe in Philadelphia.  I could not find records in any orphanage in that area.  Family says William had 2 brothers, one went to Canada where a town is named after him and another brother lived in Illinois. This Illinois brother, the family says, wrote to William but neither visited him in Missouri that the family can remember.

What is for certain, is when William Burris Rimby was in Barren County, Kentucky, he bought land in partnership with Thomas Tinsley.  I found it rather interesting as to how the deed was written, although many deeds were written with this type of description, you really had to know your trees!

Book S page 183
"Barren County, Kentucky  14 Aug. 1841
Know all men by these presents that I Jonathan Hunt of Barren County, State of Kentucky for and in consideration of the sum of Two Hundred and Seventy Five dollars paid me by William B. Rimby and Thomas Tinsley.....etc.  Three several tracts of land, first containing ninety acres more or less.....on the waters of Dry Creek and bounded by the lands of Thomas Lane and James Barton Jr. and running as follows: towit Beginning at a birch in Henricks line thence North 5 East, 4 poles to a dogwood in Thomas Curds line, thence with the same North 80 West 244 poles to a white Oak, thence South 10 East 72 poles to two red Oaks, thence South 80 East 180 poles to a sourwood on Henricks line and etc.... "

In the three tracts of land there is more mention of chestnut, 2 black oaks, black gum, sugartree, spanish oak, and poplar trees.  This description shows how nicely wooded this country was at the time and the variety of trees growing in Barren County.  Although the trees usually made more work for the farmer to clear the land for growing crops, they needed the wood for heat, to build homes, etc....  So these trees served many purposes.

This is the first record of William Burris Rimby being in Barren County, Kentucky, and along with his wedding bond we have a proven line started for this Rimby family, but only to Kentucky.  Along with his wedding bond to Sarah Tinsley, are the earliest clues to William Burris Rimby's life.

When William came to Polk County, Missouri with his wife and 8 children, William worked as a carpenter and constructed many bridges, homes, and other needed items of the day.  William also erected a church building and was named "Rimby Church," but by 1989 it had been renamed "Star Ridge Church" in the town of Rimby, Missouri. William also build the store that his son Isaiah Rimby operated for many years before it burnt down in the 1950's.  Nothing is left of the town Rimby, except the Church is still there with the help of it's congregation who have supported the building with guide wires on the west side between the roof and then to metal posts in the ground to keep the Church from leaning so far east.  Inside are lovely old well worn wooden pews, with the sheen of use.  A simple speakers stand without the need of modern devices since the building is small with the feeling of warmth.  There are heavy wires across in three places to hold the building together to keep it from leaning any further.  The foundation is the original laid rock slabs about 18" in diameter that can be seen sticking out from underneath the wood portion of the building.  It had been freshly painted and cared for in 1989, and services were still being held on Sundays.  Behind the church is a nicely kept cemetery, which the family believes that, William Burris Rimby is buried there, with his wife Sarah Ann Tinsley Rimby, even though there are no records or graves that show they are there.

William and Sarah Ann Tinsley were recorded in Barren County, Kentucky with a marriage bond, bonded by Thomas Tinsley for Sarah and William bonded himself of £50 on 1 Aug 1840.  William signed his name and Thomas Tinsley made his mark.  Although this may not be the actual wedding date, since bonds would be taken out at any time before the wedding.  The oldest child, Mary Jane, was born in 1841 by the census records, and her date of birth is unknown, to help determine the wedding date.

Sarah died not long after they came to Polk County, Missouri and William remarried to Mrs. Jane Pate on 28 Sep 1857.  Mrs. Pate had 2 children by a pervious marriage, Amanda Pate (b. 1855) and Louis Pate (b. 1858).  William and Jane had 8 more children, which means, William fathered 16 children and raised 2 step-children.  His last child was born when he was 67.  William Burris Rimby had 10 boys and 6 girls, by looking at their birth dates from census records, William came to Missouri about 1857.

In the 1880 census records of Green Township, Polk County, Missouri, William is listed as being 70 years old and a retired carpenter and millwright.  He also states that his father was born in Holland and his mother was born in Pennsylvania.  Even though I am not able to connect William with any of the early Rimby's it's nice to know that the Rimby or Rimbey families contributed to many fields of growth in this country.
